Organizers of the IEEE International Conference on Connected Vehicles and Expo are pleased with the results of their recent five-day event in Vienna, Austria.
Â
“Our enthusiastic audience confirmed that connected vehicle technology will be a part of almost every transport type going forward,” said Lee Stogner, chair of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Initiative. “Whether it is a car or truck, consumers will want the systems that will keep them safe and entertained on increasingly crowded highways. There will also be a huge aftermarket once the industry has established standards along with the help of IEEE and international governments.”
Â
Connected vehicle (CV) technology employs wireless modems and sensors to connect and communicate with other vehicles, roadway infrastructure and systems, as well as the cloud. Current technologies include adaptive speed control, self- and automated parking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.
Â
ICCVE 2015 will be in Shenzhen, China, 26-30 October. Shenzhen, just north of Hong Kong, will be celebrating its 35(th) anniversary next year as China’s first special economic zone. It is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange and headquarters to many high-tech companies.
Â
“We had a lot of good interaction between business interests, technology developers, practitioners and policymakers in Vienna,” said Yu Yuan, ICCVE founder and 2015 general chair. “We are expecting more outstanding results, insights and ideas to be presented next year in China.
Â
“ICCVE 2015 will also be a unique opportunity to explore and establish collaborations with connected vehicle business and industry leaders in the Chinese market.”
Â
ICCVE attendees in Austria had the chance to learn from and network with engineers and others working on connected and automated vehicle technology throughout the world. Government, academic and industry leaders all shared their insights on where CV technology is headed. Topics included, among others:
Â
  — Evolution of global mobility systems & mobile Internet
  — The role of satellite communications & digital roadways
  — New business models enabled by CV technology
  — Global harmonization of regulations & standards
  — Policy, economics & social implications of CVs
  — The expansion of V2V (vehicle to vehicle) to V2I (infrastructure) & V2X
      (everything else)
  — The importance of cybersecurity in CVs ICCVE is cosponsored by more than 20 societies and organizations, including IEEE-USA. The event has rotated between Beijing (2012), Las Vegas (2013) and Vienna. Reinhard Pfliegl, managing director of the Austrian Association for Alternative Propulsion Systems, chaired this year’s conference.
Â
IEEE-USA serves the public good and promotes the careers and public policy interests of more than 200,000 engineering, computing and technology professionals who are U.S. members of IEEE.
