BorgWarner has won the ninth annual SAE Foundation Gordon Millar Award. The award, which is funded by AVL, recognizes an individual or organization that best demonstrates continuous philanthropic support of the SAE Foundation’s mission to encourage and increase student participation and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The 2019 award is particularly meaningful as AVL and the engineering community celebrate the legacy of Dr. Gordon Millar, 94, who recently passed away.
“Gordon Millar was a pillar of the engineering community. He was a respected engineer who dedicated his time and talent to developing the next-generation. Throughout his career, he used his influence to strengthen the engineering community and to empower women and students.” said AVL Americas Chairman and CEO Don Manvel. “Honoring this spirit, we are proud to present this award to BorgWarner, a company that enables young people to create and innovate.”
Since 1987, BorgWarner has contributed more than $1 million to the SAE Foundation to fund SAE’s educational programs, such as A World In Motion® (AWIM). Each year, the AWIM program provides more than 100,000 students with STEM educational materials and the tools to pursue a career in a STEM field.
In addition to providing financial support, BorgWarner has demonstrated its commitment to AWIM by volunteering in classrooms in communities where BorgWarner employees live and work. In the classroom, volunteers encourage students to develop and apply STEM-based skills through hands-on activities.
BorgWarner recently expanded its support of AWIM beyond the United States to include other countries such as Brazil, China, Korea, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
