American Airlines unveils special Flagship livery ahead of centennial year

With just six months to go until its centennial celebration, American Airlines has unveiled a special Flagship® livery that blends the airline’s rich heritage with a modern, premium future. The aircraft will begin flying next month on a Boeing 777-300 registered as N735AT, marking a significant milestone as the airline prepares to celebrate 100 years of service.

The special livery reflects American’s historic design elements while signaling a new era of premium travel, as the aircraft is also scheduled to receive a refreshed interior featuring a more luxurious onboard experience.

“American has thoughtfully chosen a design that evokes our rich history while looking ahead to our next 100 years,” said Ron DeFeo, Chief Communications Officer at American Airlines. “Throughout American’s history, ‘Flagship®’ has always been recognized as our premium travel experience. Our renewed focus on the customer experience is making premium travel better than ever across all aspects of our customers’ travel journeys. Painting the original Flagship® design on our Flagship® aircraft is a powerful way to honor that legacy while embracing the future.”

Honoring Aviation Heritage

At the foundation of the new design is the airline’s Silver Eagle® paint color, currently used across more than 1,600 aircraft in American’s mainline and regional fleet. The livery also features the iconic orange lightning bolt motif, first introduced nearly 90 years ago on the legendary Douglas DC-3, which played a pivotal role in American Airlines’ early premium travel offerings.

When American introduced its DC-3 aircraft, each plane was named after cities served by the airline. Continuing that tradition, the new Boeing 777-300 will be named “Flagship DFW”, honoring the airline’s home and largest hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Toward the rear of the aircraft, customers will notice a historic roundel featuring one of the most recognizable symbols in American Airlines’ history — the eagle connecting the world. Today, American serves more than 350 destinations worldwide, operating more flights and carrying more customers than any other airline.

A Modern Premium Experience

The special livery also introduces a new chapter for American’s premium travel offering. The refreshed Boeing 777-300 aircraft will feature an upgraded interior, including the new Flagship Suite® seats and enhanced cabin experiences across all classes.

The Flagship Suite® seats represent American’s first business-class product featuring privacy doors, wireless charging pads and a unique chaise lounge seating option with an adjustable headrest pillow.

Premium Economy customers will also benefit from enhanced comfort, including wireless charging, new headrest wings and improved calf and footrests. Meanwhile, Main Cabin passengers will experience upgraded international inflight amenities, including 4K QLED screens — the first introduced in a U.S. airline’s main cabin — along with USB-C and AC power.

These upgraded interiors will be rolled out across refreshed Boeing 777-300 aircraft next year, featuring 70 Flagship Suite® seats and 44 Premium Economy seats.

Celebrating 100 Years of Innovation

Since the 1930s, American Airlines has used the “Flagship” designation to represent its highest level of service. Initially introduced on coast-to-coast transcontinental flights, the Flagship experience now extends across the airline’s long-haul international network.

As American approaches its 100-year milestone in 2026, the new Flagship livery reflects both a proud aviation heritage and a forward-looking commitment to premium travel innovation.

With its historic design, modern interiors and expanded premium offerings, the special Flagship Boeing 777-300 represents a fitting tribute to American Airlines’ first century — and an exciting glimpse into the airline’s next 100 years.
