Bursa, – a base for automotive industry

BURSA - Bursa, known as the ''city of textile'' for years, has become a base for automotive industry thanks to rise in exports from the automotive companies in this city.

According to figures of the Automotive Industry Association (OSD), Uludag Exporters Association (UIB) and Bursa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BTSO), Oyak Renault, Tofas and Karsan are some of the automotive companies in this city.

Oyak Renault, which started to manufacture automotive and automotive by-industry in Bursa in 1971, increased its turnover from 170 million to 3.1 billion new Turkish liras (YTL) between 1998 and 2004. This company exported 130,903 vehicles last year, and earned 1.4 billion USD from its exports. On the other hand, Oyak Renault export by-products worth more than 70 million USD.

Also, another automotive company in Bursa, Tofas’ turnover rose to 1.9 billion YTL in 2004. Tofas earned 748 million USD, exporting 82,475 vehicles last year. Tofas’ by-industry exports amounted to 73 million USD in 2004.

Meanwhile, Karsan automotive company had a turnover around 360 million YTL, and earned 6.9 million USD from its exports last year.

On the other hand, the ready-to-wear and textile companies earned only 1.3 billion USD from their exports in 2004
