On the 16th of March, I had the pleasure of speaking at Autonomy Paris. I was able to share with the audience what mobility data can do for them today when used with mobility intelligence. Conferences like Autonomy tend to focus on the future and the many promises it holds. But I wanted to show what can, and is, being done today, because the future begins now.
I told the story of three successful use cases focused on the many ways mobility data and mobility intelligence can make our cities smarter and more sustainable. The three cases I chose are representatives of the wide array of tools mobility intelligence can give both city planners and companies acting in the urban space to help achieve their goals and revolve around implementing EV Infrastructure, deploying MaaS services efficiently, and improving congestion and multi-modal mobility.
The charging stations challenge
The first use case I want to share is the work we did with one of the leading energy providers in Europe. They were faced with a double challenge – convincing cities and municipalities that they’re the right partner to deploy EV Infrastructure, and prioritizing sites selection to create a solution that will democratize access to charging stations. This required a thoughtful plan, based on data-driven decisions.
Creating charging stations infrastructure is an expensive process and any mistake can prove very costly. But EVCP (electric vehicle charge points) infrastructure needs to expand rapidly to meet demand as cities are scrambling to encourage citizens to shift to more sustainable transportation and try to reach net-zero targets. And all this, while protecting and justifying the ROI on each station deployed.
In order to inform the decision, our partner used our EV Intelligence Solution. A set of easy-to-understand dashboards that are focused on making the right decisions easy. The data used is connected vehicle data (ICE and EV), merged with additional data streams including mobile data, census data, geoinformation, points of interest, and more.
It is a powerful tool, that is suitable to any charge point operator, department of transportation or municipality, regardless of its size and market reach, and does not require any integration. Our partner put EV intelligence to use to drive the best decisions when:
- Preparing RFPs,
- Planning network deployment
- Prioritizing sites selection
- Exploring expansion to new markets and regions
- Calculating potential future usage of charging stations.
Using EV intelligence to ensure EV Adoption in urban and rural zones, accelerate time to market, and validate decisions.
As a result of our collaboration, the citizens of one major European city will soon be able to enjoy smart and sustainable EV Infrastructure. Over 3000 potential locations were examined and appraised and after careful consideration, dozens were selected for publicly accessible charging stations. With many more cities in western Europe to come.
Supporting Alternative Transportation – Micromobility, MaaS, and Beyond
Let me take you to the other side of the world, to Brazil. Our partner there is Tembici, the leading micromobility provider in Latin America.
Tembici uses docking stations for a shared bicycles and e-bikes service. It faces several challenges including maintaining low operational costs, increasing ridership, and expanding its services to new regions. All this, while having limited resources, needing to move fast and smart and managing costs.
Using our MaaS Intelligence solution Tembici are able to understand the mobility patterns of potential riders at a scale of a whole city, region, or country. It also provides insights into the hyper-local level and to points of interest (POI). Tembici are particularly interested in short trips from 1 to 8 km looking to deploy the right amount of mobility devices at the right places to match the right riders.
The MaaS intelligence dashboards used laid out the relevant information in front of Tembici’s decision-makers (once again with no integration required) and provides actionable insights that allowed them to assess and plan future expansions as well as optimize current operations.
MaaS intelligence’s support to Tembici’s market expansion efforts allowed Tembici to maintain its regional leadership, increase its fleet size by 50%, and expand the service to São Paulo and Marianópolis in Brazil and Bogotá in Colombia. Making sure riders can always find Tembici’s bicycle where it is most convenient for them.
How Mobility data and Mobility Intelligence Powered Smart City Solution Cuts 20 Minutes from Daily Commutes
Kayma is one of the leading consulting firms in Israel, a country that is booming with smart cities projects and new infrastructure deployment. One of the central municipalities in the country has turned to it for help. Its industrial area – with tens of offices buildings, a local mall, a lively restaurant scene, and residential complexes – was chronically congested.
To overcome congestion, and promote better sustainability, some of the traffic coming into the area needed to become multi-modal. Using Urban Intelligence dashboards our partners were given insights into current mobility patterns in the area and were able to formulate a policy that promotes multi-modal mobility and alleviates some of the vehicle traffic in the area.
Based on these insights the city was able to make significant infrastructure changes, modify some bus routes and create an environment that encourages the use of micromobility solutions. One example of the power of the insights gleaned using mobility data and intelligence was the construction of a footbridge from the nearest train station to the entrance of the commercial zone. A bridge that without urban intelligence planners were blind to the need for.
Public investments in this case translated directly to public benefit. The city and Kayma were able to leverage urban intelligence not only to understand the problem, but to measure the impact of solutions with near real-time data.
The results were staggering, an average 20-minute reduction in daily commute across the board that made the continued development of the area much more feasible. In fact, the success of this project became the model for more than 20 similar projects in Israel, all using the power of urban intelligence.
This is what technology should be about, using data for good and generating immediate impact. And this is happening right now. Creating positive change in the world. We have moved beyond promises, and we invite you to drive that impact with us.
