ACI Motorsports Continues Winning Ways at Road America With USAC Porsche Sprint Challenge West Triple Sweep

ACI Motorsports continued its winning ways at Road America this month with another run of multiple overall and class victories this weekend in a full schedule of USAC Porsche Sprint Challenge North America, Sprint USA West and Endurance Challenge by Yokohama races, August 13 – 16.The highlight was the team’s second triple race win sweep of the season in Saturday morning’s second and final Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West sprint of the race weekend. Alex Pratt stepped up for the overall and Porsche 911 Cup Pro-Am wins in his No. 206 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup. Matt Smith shook off a challenging opening few days of the Road America weekend to take Masters class honors and fourth overall in his No. 274 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup while Greg Herback completed ACI’s winning trifecta with a Cayman class victory in his No. 49 ACI Motorsports Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport.

Completing Saturday’s solid ACI podium presence was Muzaffar Gafurov, who joined Pratt on the rostrum with third place finishes both overall and in Pro-Am in his No. 200 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup. Additionally, Herback’s victory sealed a weekend win sweep of his own after also scoring Cayman class honors in Friday’s opening USA West race.

Saturday’s triple followed the record-setting IMSA Porsche Carrera Cup North America triple sweep a trio of ACI Motorsports teams and drivers recorded at Watkins Glen International in late June. Emerging driving talent Janne Stiak broke through for his first U.S. race win in the No. 40 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup. Pro-Am division championship leader Patrick Mulcahy captured the victory in that class in the No. 54 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup while Smith – who joins Pratt in racing ACI Porsches in both Carrera Cup and Pro-Am – took the Masters class win in the No. 74 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup. The Glen triple win sweep was the first for a team in the history of the Carrera Cup North America series.

ACI’s half dozen drivers and their teams also showed well in the weekend’s Porsche Sprint Challenge North America doubleheaders. Carrying the ACI flag in Saturday’s second and final Porsche 911 Cup race that closed out the sprint portion of the weekend was Jens Hantson who shook off some early weekend issues for a hard-earned sixth-place overall and Pro-Am class finish in his No. 225 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup. Gafurov in turn rebounded from his own early-weekend challenges to record a solid top-10 overall and Pro-Am finish in the No. 200 Porsche.Pratt was the top finisher in Friday’s 911 Cup North America opening race, and from the start it looked like he would join Hanston as ACI’s main contenders in Saturday’s finale. He worked his way up to third in the race’s opening minutes only to be sidelined with damage to his car’s cooling system after a contact incident in the typically frantic first lap fight.

Smith closed out his weekend strong actually driving a borrowed 911 Cup car ACI arranged from Kellymoss after his primary mount to start the weekend was sidelined in a practice incident. Smith not only won the Masters race in USA West in the loaner but also charged to third in the Masters division – and a stout 14th overall – in Saturday’s North America 911 Cup finale.

Smith also joined top Porsche driver Yves Baltas in the No. 274 as the lone ACI Motorsports entry in Sunday’s featured Porsche Endurance Challenge North America 100-minute race. A pair of penalties negated the promise shown early where Smith qualified sixth in 911 Cup Pro-Am and climbed as high as fourth in his opening stint.

Among the weekend’s race performance awards earned at Road America was the Good Boy Vodka Fastest Lap Award Pratt earned in Friday’s opening USA West race while finishing second in Pro-Am. Gafurov in turn stepped up to secure the coveted Apex’n Award for improving the most positions on his way to the third place Pro-Am class showing.Next up for ACI Motorsports is the team’s final appearance of its Road America triumvirate this month for the annual SRO America race weekend at the 4-mile Elkhart Lake road course, August 28 – 30.

Curt Swearingin, ACI Motorsports Team Principal: “It’s really cool to be the first team in history to earn a triple clean sweep in Carrera Cup North America. I don’t know about overseas, but for us to achieve this in North America with so many big teams in this paddock that have been doing this for 25 years or more is really a great accomplishment on our part. We have been in competition for less than 10 years, so to be the only ones to do it in single race is a nice achievement. I didn’t know that it was history making at the time, but Porsche came to us and told us the good news. Now, to do it again in Porsche Sprint Challenge West is very nice. Carrera Cup is obviously a little more intense, but anytime you can take all of the class wins and the overall in any racing series, you have accomplished something. All of the ACI Motorsports drivers drove great this weekend, and I am glad they had some results to show for it. I was really impressed with Alex’s driving Saturday for the overall win. Friday was the first time he had ever started on pole and then he had a great start from another pole on Saturday. He put time on the competition and managed the gap for the rest of the race. Greg also had a great sweep in the Cayman class in USA West, and it was great to see Matt come up with a victory too on Saturday morning. I am really proud of the entire ACI Motorsports team and all of our drivers for a truly no-quit weekend.”

Alex Pratt, Driver – No. 206 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup: “I will drive in both Sprint Challenge series just when it fits in the schedule. My main championship is Sprint Challenge North America but, I don’t get a lot of seat time, so when the weekend allows it, we try to do as much as we can. It worked out at Road America, and I always try and be at the front. We race in Carrera Cup too. There, we try to be top-10 and here in Sprint Challenge we try to be a little bit further up.”Jens Hantson, Driver – No. 225 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup: “Going into this week I knew it was going to be tough getting back in the car after a six-week hiatus and be up to speed. But we were pretty strong up until qualifying. A mistake put us back into 25th place for the first race, but a decent time got us up to 15th starting place for race two. So, we were able to work our way up from 15th to sixth in the second race, just picking our points and being patient. I think overall the team did very well, all things considered, and I am looking forward to Road Atlanta. Going into the series, I was looking for top-10 finishes and now I am sort of aiming for top fives. A top five would be great.”

Matt Smith, Driver – No. 274 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup: “I can’t say enough about how amazing this team is. We had a little bit of an issue in practice two, tubbed the car, and thanks to ACI and Kellymoss too for chipping in to get us a loaner car. We got it just about 20 minutes before Friday’s first race, but the ACI team was just magic in motion. They put me out there, it was pretty awesome, and they gave me a heck of a race car. It was such a lift to get that off of my shoulders. Obviously, I was a little bit upset over what had occurred, so I was happy to get that done. The level of expertise, care and attention to detail that the team, from top to bottom, puts into everything can be seen in the results on track. Very professional and the level of engineering is just top notch. You can see it in the results.”

Muzaffar Gafurov, Driver – No. 200 ACI Motorsports Porsche 911 Cup: “I can’t thank the team enough. It is a super professional environment where we are at with ACI. They push us to excel and at the same time provide all of the support that we need. We had an unfortunate incident Friday, which I just couldn’t do anything about, but the team put the car back together as good as new. We went back out and right away had the pace. We are super fortunate to be here, and I just love Road America. This was one of my favorite tracks when we were doing track days a few years ago. Matt and I ended up on the Sprint West podium Saturday morning. It is a lower turnout as far as cars go, but we still raced to the top three, and it was nice to earn the Apex’n Award for passing the most cars.”Greg Herback, Driver – No. 49 ACI Motorsports Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport: “ACI Motorsports did great. They had to really work double time to get everything ready for me to race in both Cayman North America and USA West, particularly for race one in both series on Friday. There was virtually no time in between to go from one to the other and take care of both of the cars. They stepped up to the challenge. It was perfect, but it’s not that big a deal for me as the driver. You are kind of lathered up and ready to go from one right into the other. You have to take a breath once you get inside the car, but after that it is kind of like endurance racing.”
