Raleigh is a deeply personal dedication from Helderburg Founder and CEO Paul Potratz to his father, who passed away when Potratz was just a teenager. That profound loss ultimately became the inspiration for Helderburg itself. While his father loved fine English craftsmanship—from classic Triumph motorcycles to bespoke English sporting guns—the vehicle draws its name, emotional gravity, and design language from a far simpler possession: a vintage English Raleigh 3-speed bicycle.

"When I was young, my father mounted a diamond-stitched child seat over the rear fender of his Raleigh bicycle so we could explore Chicago together," Potratz shares. "What I remember most are the rough cobblestones of Lincoln Park. The bike had no suspension, and back then, it was just something to endure. Today, I’d give anything for one more ride over those same streets. The older I get, the more I realize that the simple, quiet moments are the ones that become your anchor. Raleigh was built to preserve that feeling."
To achieve this level of narrative depth, Potratz bypassed traditional automotive trim and commissioned Ashcombe, a master artisan who has spent decades engraving best-grade English shotguns. Rather than working from a catalog, Ashcombe spent hundreds of hours hand-engraving Raleigh’s high-touch points, including the door handles, latches, window cranks, vents, and steering wheel center. The intricate scrolls and vignettes depict real family memories: pheasant and dove hunts, field dogs at work, and even a small portrait of the family dog, Lucy, worked into the metal like a private signature.

At first glance, Raleigh’s exterior looks black. It isn’t. The body is finished in a custom metallic green with a deep bronze undertone, mixed entirely by eye to echo the dark metallic brown, creamy white, and green of Potratz’s father’s vintage bicycle. In the sun, the paint opens up to show its multidimensional depth, remaining calm, intentional, and built to last.

To complement this bespoke finish, the exterior design utilizes structural materials rather than cosmetic additions. Thicker-gauge aluminum is selected for the body panels to ensure perfect surface straightness, accented by hand-cut bonnet louvers that reference pre-war European coachbuilding, a German metal grille, and custom-milled billet aluminum brackets.

This total system integration extends beneath the surface: the interior is treated as an acoustic chamber using proprietary laminated solar glass to isolate resonance, while the chassis utilizes an in-house CNC workflow, proprietary brakes, and German-engineered shocks to eliminate top-heavy body roll entirely. Power is delivered by the proprietary Helderburg Mark 3.5 turbo diesel engine, which preserves numbers-matching authenticity while offering a dual personality—whisper-quiet during refined touring, yet visceral when the custom exhaust valves open.
