Daikin Industries is pleased to announce that it has received a $0.9 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop advanced high performance electrolytes, based on fluorochemistries, which will allow lithium ion batteries to operate at higher voltages and temperatures. A major manufacturer of fluorochemicals, Daikin is uniquely positioned to supply high performance electrolyte formulations for lithium ion batteries that can address the advancing needs of the transportation, energy storage, telecommunications, and military markets. Daikin’s patented chemistries enable manufacturers to build lithium ion batteries with higher energy density, longer life, and greatly enhanced safety.
According to Dr. Ron Hendershot, Director of R&D for Daikin America, “Daikin has developed unique fluoroadditive and fluoro co-solvent compounds that when added to electrolyte, can increase the performance of next generation lithium ion batteries. The development of these electrolyte chemistries will be a critical element needed by the industry to achieve the cost and performance targets for lithium ion batteries set by the DOE and the USABC (United States Advanced Battery Consortium)”.
Daikin America recently announced the commissioning of their new, state of the art electrolyte manufacturing facility located in their fluoroproduct plant complex in Decatur, AL. This facility has the capability to supply in commercial scale all the electrolyte formulations that will be developed as part of the DOE project.
Daikin America, Inc., headquartered in Orangeburg, New York, is one of the largest fluoroproduct suppliers in the world. Daikin provides molding resins, fine powders, aqueous dispersions, melt processable fluoropolymers, fluoroelastomers, and high performance fluorochemicals for many critical applications.
Daikin America is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daikin Industries Ltd of Osaka, Japan. Daikin is Japan’s leading manufacturer of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, and fluorochemical products.
