SAE International presented four recipients with the Henry Ford II Distinguished Award for Excellence in Automotive Engineering during the SAE 2012 World Congress held in Detroit.
This award, established in 1988, recognizes SAE International members and teams who use their engineering skills to achieve product or manufacturing process contributions, which are assessed to have had the greatest positive effect on the passenger car, truck and bus industries. The award is named after Henry Ford II to honor his memory and enormous impact on the mobility industry.
Those receiving awards included:
— Ching-Hung Chuang, Technical Expert, Ford Motor Company
— Yan Fu, Technical Expert, Ford Motor Company
— Guosong Li, Research Engineer, Ford Motor Company
— Ren-Jye Yang, Senior Technical Leader, Ford Motor Company An employee of the Ford Motor Company for more than 20 years, Dr. Chuang has the responsibility to develop multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO) methodology and process for vehicle performance improvement and weight reduction by considering safety, durability attributes and vehicle program applications. He has published more than 40 journal and conference papers and two U.S. patents.
Dr. Chuang, a certified Six-Sigma Black Belt, holds a bachelor’s degree in hydraulics engineering from Chung Yuan Christian University, a master’s degree in Power Mechanical Engineering from National Tsing Hua University and a PhD in Engineering Mechanics from Old Dominion University.
Joining Ford Research and Advanced Engineering in 1999, Dr. Fu currently serves the role of an optimization and robust design technical expert. She has led the developments and applications of advanced optimization and robust design technologies for vehicle safety design, which enable many of the Ford vehicle programs to achieve Insurance Institute for Highway Top Safety Pick Award and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program 5-Star, as well as meet or exceed requirements mandated by the new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Dr. Fu is a member of SAE International, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making. She received her bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University, master’s degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
An employee of Ford Motor Company since 2005, Dr. Li currently is research engineer in Research and Advanced Engineering. His research interests include response surface based optimization, MDO, CAE model verification and validation and optimization tool development for vehicle safety design.
Dr. Li, a member of SAE, received his doctor of Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and PhD from Wright State University.
Joining Ford Motor Company in 1988, Dr. Yang currently is a senior technical leader in Research and Advanced Engineering. His research areas of interest include MDO, safety optimization and robustness methods, model verification and validation, robust design and statistics methods. He has published more than 50 referred journal papers.
Dr. Yang, an ASME and SAE fellow, received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and master’s degree in Engineering Mechanics from National Taiwan University. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa.
