BorgWarner’s (NYSE: BWA) new advanced low-friction silent chain and compact hydraulic tensioner help the Daihatsu Mira e:S achieve 30 km/liter (70.5 mpg). Branded “e:S” for “energy saving technology,” the minicar launched in Japan last fall and is powered by a 0.66-liter I3 gasoline engine which also drives the recently launched Daihatsu Tanto, Move and Conte minicars for the Japanese market. Daihatsu expects e:S technology to be available for other car applications soon. BorgWarner’s friction-reducing engine timing technologies provide low weight, compact packaging and simplified tensioner tuning compared with competitive products. Daihatsu presented a Suppliers’ Excellence Award to BorgWarner to recognize its contributions toward the engine’s outstanding fuel economy.
“At BorgWarner, we understand the intricate interactions between engine timing system components because we design, develop and manufacture a complete portfolio of products, from chains and camshaft phasers to tensioners and sprockets. As technology leaders, we excel in developing integrated solutions for low-weight, low-friction and low-noise applications,” said Joe Fadool, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Morse TEC. “We are pleased to expand our 25-year relationship with Daihatsu and honored to receive a Suppliers’ Excellence Award.”
Working closely with Daihatsu, BorgWarner engineers used dynamic and simulative testing tools, state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and light-weight materials to produce optimized, high-performance timing system components. Based on its best-in-class silent chain technology, BorgWarner developed a new low-friction, low-weight and smaller-width inverted tooth chain with superior noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). In addition, a new lightweight, compact hydraulic tensioner precisely maintains chain control while reducing loads and frictional losses. The combination of BorgWarner’s new silent chain and compact hydraulic tensioner reduces weight and friction to help the engine run more efficiently and improve fuel economy.
