Where Steel Continues to Strengthen Its Position as the Preferred Automotive Material

“This is technology transfer at its best,” says Louis L. Schorsch, chief executive officer, Flat Products Americas, Arcelor Mittal and chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) about his role as guest speaker at AISI’s Great Designs in Steel Seminar in Livonia, Mich., on March 7, 2007. “Focused, current and well planned, the Great Designs in Steel annual seminar has become the premier showcase for the latest trends and applications in automotive steel technologies.”

AISI’s Automotive Applications Committee (AAC) initiated this annual event six years ago to assist automotive engineers in using advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) technologies for designing and building safe, affordable, fuel- efficient and environmentally responsible passenger cars, sport utility vehicles and light trucks.

The 2007 program will offer four track sessions with presentations by automotive and steel industry engineers and designers to illustrate the latest trends in steel usage for vehicles on the road today. Successful case studies will be on display as actual components, bodies and full vehicles on the exhibit floor.

“New advanced high-strength steels, new weight-saving applications in cars, trucks and SUVs, new manufacturing technology and lots of new design data are appearing all the time. Top OEMs and their suppliers know that this is the place to come to learn,” says John Ferriola, executive vice president, Nucor Corporation.

Great Designs in Steel 2007 is a full-day seminar to be held at the Laurel Manor Conference Center in Livonia, Mich. The program will begin at 6:45 a.m. and will continue to 4 p.m. A full program, seminar topic outline and speaker information are available on the AISI website at www.autosteel.org.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 32 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 118 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI’s member companies represent more than 75 percent of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.

The AAC is a subcommittee of the Market Development Committee of AISI and focuses on advancing the use of steel in the highly competitive automotive market. With offices and staff located in Detroit, cooperation between the automobile and steel industries has been key to its success. This industry cooperation resulted in the formation of the Auto/Steel Partnership, a consortium of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation and the member companies of the AAC.
