Schaeffler Group South Africa Receives Volkswagen Award for Powertrain Commodity Supplier of the Yea

During Volkswagen South Africa’s recent annual supplier recognition event in Cape Town, South Africa, the Schaeffler Group’s South African LuK division was awarded the 2007 Powertrain Commodity Supplier of the Year.

“This is the 16th time that LuK’s performance has been rewarded by Volkswagen and takes the total number of awards received from South African OEM’s to 71,” said Len Terblanche, chief executive officer, Schaeffler South Africa. “However, we will continue to further improve the quality of our products and our delivery performance in our quest to exceed the expectations of our customers.”

He contributed the success to the highly motivated team at the LuK plant in Port Elisabeth, South Africa that has embraced all aspects of the Schaeffler Group’s worldwide quality initiative, “Fit for Quality.”

The LuK clutches manufactured in Port Elisabeth are fitted onto various Volkswagen models that are available in South Africa and Europe. The LuK plant also manufactures clutch facings, an integral part of every clutch, that meet stringent durability and robustness requirements of the industry.

Schaeffler’s South African operation has been a supplier to Volkswagen since 1989. The relationship between Volkswagen – LuK’s first European customer – and LuK dates back to 1965 when the supplier designed and manufactured the first diaphragm springs clutches for the automaker.

The Schaeffler Group, with its brands INA, LuK and FAG, and approximately 66,000 employees at more than 180 locations in 50 countries, generates group sales of more than 8.9 billion euros (FY 2007) and ranks amongst the leading rolling bearing manufacturers and suppliers to the automotive industry worldwide. To serve the North American automotive market, the Schaeffler Group operates a 78,000-square-foot North American Automotive Tech Center in Troy, Mich. This facility employs 165 engineers and technicians and houses a 30,000- square-foot, state-of-the-art test lab outfitted with multiple test cells capable of performing test simulations for engine and engine components. Schaeffler Group Automotive has headquarters in Fort Mill, S.C. and manufacturing facilities in South Carolina, Missouri, Ohio and Ontario, Canada.
